The Site of Bakan Koshinikata Office

It is the site of the government office established by the Hagi Domain in 1840. The office was involved in the warehousing business, financial business, and international trade through Nagasaki. They stored the transported cargoes as collateral and ran the financial and sales businesses and made enormous profits. Shinsaku Takasugi was appointed the chief of Bakan Koshinikata in 1865 and the next year, he was appointed the governor-general of the navy.

It is an important cultural property designated by the state which was built in 1906.
In the second half of Meiji, Sir Ernest Satow who was the British Ambassador to Japan at that time gave an advice to establish British Consulate to his country. British Consulate was established in Shimonoseki in 1901.

It was the leading red-light district in Japan and patriots who lived at the end of the Edo period also visited there. It was also the place of political talks. In this neighborhood, there was a shop that was the largest in the town, and there is an anecdote that Ryoma cut the decorative ridge-end tile for Miya-ya with his sword. The townscape has changed but Suehiroinari-jinja Shrine remains.

9Kameyama Hachiman-gu Shrine

Enshrined deities are the Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Nintoku. It was transferred from Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine in 859 in the Heian Period. There are many places of interest, such as the remains of a gun battery that bombarded the American commercial ship during the Shimonoseki Campaign, Fuku no Zo (statue of puffer fish) as the largest in Japan, and Kame no Ike (pond of turtles) (estimated to be around 100 turtles), etc.

Emperor Antoku, who was defeated in the Battle of Dan-no-ura and drowned himself, is enshrined. In association with the waka composed by Nii no Ama at the time of the drowning, it was designed to represent the Palace of the Dragon King.

The Sino-Japanese Peace Conference was held at Shunpanro and the Treaty of Shimonoseki was concluded. Furnishing goods, materials, etc., are exhibited.

6Former Akita Shokai Building

23-11, Nabe-cho, Shimonoseki City

The building was completed in 1915. It was the first building constructed of reinforced concrete in western Japan and is one of the oldest buildings as the same kind of building that still exists. There is a Japanese-style house and garden on the top of the building.

7Nabe Post Office

22-8, Nabe-cho, Shimonoseki City

It is a two-story building made of bricks and built in the Western style, which was completed in 1900. It is the oldest Western architectural building that exists in Shimonoseki and the oldest in Japan as an active post office building. It has been designated as a registered tangible property (structure).
